Question:
Who has taken Singulair for your nasal/sinus problems, and did you notice
any definitive improvement from taking it?
Answer:
I have taken Singulair and Accolate (one or other, not both at once!) for
over three years now, primarily for severe allergic rhinitis (although I
also have asthma, it mostly been controlled pretty well with inhaled
steroids). However, I always have taken it in combination with one or other
of the newer antihistamines (neoclarityn, just now) in what my allergist
calls 'combined mediator blockade' therapy. It actually works pretty well
for me, but much better in the winter than the summer when the additional
pollen load on top of dust mite becomes too much. I certainly notice if I
miss a dose of either of the antihistamine or antileukotriene, as soon as
the next day. The downside is that effective rhinitis control, for me,
worsens my chronic bacterial sinusitis. So I get sinusitis all winter, and
rhinitis all summer. I don't notice any side-effects at all from the Singulair/Accolate, and I
have had annual liver-function tests done which have all been OK too. I
think limited reasearch supports my allergist's pet theory (see links), and
it certainly seems to do me no harm.
