Asthma Medications & Inhalers

Question:
I was diagnosed with emphasymia in November 1999. I had my first asthma attack in March 2000 (I do not have any allergies). My MD gave me Predisone and a Comlivent inhaler. Starting with this past June I have had an asthma episode every month up to an including this month. In June MD prescribed Dzmacort (2 puffs 2 x a day) to prevent asthma attacks. When I told him it was not preventing the attacks he prescribed Serevent inhaler (2 puffs 2 x a day). I am still having asthma attacks. How effective are these medicines? Have they worked well for you? The glands in my neck swell and I experience hheavy sweats when I have an asthma attack. Could I have a viral infection that is causing these attacks, MD does not think so. Any information on your experiences will be greatly appreciated. I am also an ex-smoker for 6 months now and am 69 years old.

Answer:
I think that you mean 'Azmacort' instead of 'Dzmacort'. This is an old medication that is virtually obsolete. Typically this medication is prescribed by GP's who have not been keeping current on asthma and its treatment. I suggest that you ask for a referral to a specialist, or ask to be switched to one of the newer medications (such as Pulmicort or Flovent).
