Question:
I would like to share an experience with you all, in the hopes that some of
you may benefit.
My eight month old baby "Tashiana" was diagnosed by her pediatrician as
astmatic. She could not sleep for more than a few minutes at a time due to
her struggle for breath. After aprx. 1-2 visits a week to the pediatrician
and or family doctor, and endless ammounts of medication and machinery, the
situation seemed hopeless. Some of the drugs caused undesireable side
effects, and appeared to make no noticeable improvement.
With much skepticism, I fianlly conceeded to try the suggestion of a friend
and visit a chiropractor.
Two visits later, and ever since, my baby has been 100 % healthy and drug
free.
This might have been a coincidence, but I have met several others since who
have had similar experiences.
I estimate that it cost well over $1000 in aprx. a one month period for the
drugs and MD visits, whereas the chiropractic, while priced at $10 per visit
was actually provided free as a gesture of good will on the part of the
chiropractic doctor. Dr. Sonja Kahkonen of Sudbury, Ontario.
I called my local newspaper, "The Sudbury Star", and they done a front page
story which caused a flood of calls to my doctor from asthma sufferers who
had no idea that this was an alternative..
Answer:
In spite of the fact that there is no apparent link between asthma and
what chiropractors practice, these sorts of stories should be treated
seriously. Before "TJ" gets shot down in flames of abuse by the
one-eyed bigot brigate, let's put our heads together and try to work
out how this chiropractor may have cured this baby.
In terms of the present medical understanding of asthma, it is,
indeed, hard to find a link. But Buteyko theory can offer an
explanation. If this child was in chronic pain, her little body
would have been stressed and consequently she would have been
breathing too much. Buteyko offers chronic overbreathing as the
direct cause of asthma in those people whose airways are pre-disposed
to asthma. With successful chiropractic intervention, her pain would
have been removed, the over-breathing would have been arrested and
the asthma disappeared.
This chiropracotor may have uncovered a common source of pain in
infants. This particular infant was prone to asthma, others may
react in other ways (maybe just crying a lot). This would be
interesting to investigate further.
TJ, thanks for sharing your experiences with us. May I suggest that
your child does have a pre-disposition to asthma, so watch her
breathing. As she gets older, take care she keeps her mouth closed
at all times, especially when sleeping. We will be visiting your web
site. For those interested in how over-breathing causes asthma,
