Question:
When my daughter gets an asthma attack (she's having one now) she gets
a persistent dry cough. The cough is almost non-stop, every few
seconds. This wears her out completely (she is 9 years old).
Currently she is using Ventolin,Flixotide and prednasol.
Has anyone here got this form of asthma and any suggestions for how to
combat it effectively?
Once into an attack the symptoms seem to last for about 2 weeks.
We tried a nebuliser but found that it had limited effectiveness.
Any help?
Answer:
I know how that goes - happens to me every time I get sick. You may
not be able to prevent it entirely, but here's what I've found
helpful:
1. Have her drink *lots* of water - it helps ease the irritation in
the throat, and also loosens the mucus. I usually end up carrying a
bottle or insulated mug of ice water around with me all day, and
sipping from it frequently.
2. My doctor gave me some medicine called "tessalon pearls" or
something like that. They're little pellets that keep you from
coughing (and they work pretty well).
3. If it's cold outside (too cold for a jacket) have her wear a
scarf. Cold air can make the coughing worse.
4. Try to keep her from getting sick. Have her wash her hands
frequently, eat right, etc. (I know it doesn't help much after the
fact, but it's good preventative medicin
