Question:
I know it is impossible to grow out of asthma but I have read
that children with asthma usually get better as they get older. My
daughter is 6 and has had asthma for 3 years. While it is not severe, it
is enough to drive me and her crazy. I am always checking her breathing
or listening to her chest. Sometimes I imagine she is breathing hard
even though she and my wife say she is fine. I guess I'm just paranoid
because I have asthma myself and know what it feels like. Does anyone
know at what age improvement comes? My asthma seemed to be better as a
teenager but came back when I was around 35. I guess I'm just tired
worrying about my daughter
Answer:
I know how that feels. I would have to go to the hospital as a child when I
had an asthma attack and they would give me medicine that would keep me awake
and bouncing off the walls all night long. It drove my parents crazy because
they had to stay up all night with me! I've had asthma all my life and while
it was worse when I was in elementry and middle school, it was practically
non-existent my first two years in high school. When my junior year came along
so did my asthma. I started having attacks more often and once again had to go
on an inhailer and pills. Since then I have learned that I can't drink a glass
of milk or eat ice cream anymore unless I want to have an attack. :( My asthma
has started to calm down again and I don't take any medicine except maybe every
couple of months when I have an attack. I hope that you and your daughter have
the kind of luck that I have had with my asthma, don't worry as she gets older
she will be able to handle her meds herself and you will worry less (my parents
worried as much as you do, especially since I played soccer, basketball,
volleyball, and ran track - sometimes I thought my mom was gonna run on to the
court during my b-ball games with my medicine because I was starting to breathe
hard, just like all the non-asthmatics
